Gold for Tiana
As the Olympics are on this Summer we made a Gold Medal for Tiana! We held a no-uniform day to raise some money to thank My Canine Companion, who kindly gave the school Tiana our Therapy Dog to mind as she undergoes her training. Thank you to everyone for supporting this fundraiser.

As the European Athletic Championships are taking place in Rome and Ireland are winning gold medals pupils are enjoying fun sport and active activities in St. Lachteen's N.S.
Election Results
As the Local and European Elections were being held nationally a very important vote was taking place in St. Lachteen's N.S. A No Homework in June Referendum was held by the Students Council. Parents, Pupils and Staff were given the opportunity to vote and as all three cohorts voted for No Homework after the June Bank Holiday it will now come into effect for June 2024, June 2025 and June 2026.
Amber Flag
Congratulations to all involved in St. Lachteen's N.S. on being awarded the 2023/2024 Pieta Amber Flag!

Senior Infants
Senior infants enjoyed planting seeds and we are looking forward to seeing what they have planted grow and flourish in our school garden. They also enjoyed a visit to our local playground.

Cork City Sports
Well done to all our pupils who represented the school for Cork City Sports. We are very proud of you all.
6th Class School Tour
Sixth class had a great day on their school tour to Dublin. Thank you to Garda Orla for driving us on the Garda Community Bus. They enjoyed a trip to Croke Park and the Viking Splash Tour. It may be the first of many runs through the tunnel in Croke Park for some of these pupils!
Bee Bots
Pupils enjoyed using Bee Bots Robotic Programme for coding and problem solving.
Art
Pupils in 4th class were inspired by the work of American artist Peter Max and after looking and responding to his art created their own beautiful masterpieces.
Erasmus Project
As part of the Erasmus project pupils in 6th class but careful thought, planning and preparation into a video about life in Ireland which they will present to the pupils of the school they are visiting in the Netherlands.
Potato Olympics
Junior Infants hosted our Potato Olympics today where we learned the importance of team work while practicing lots of different skills. We watched previous Olympic Opening Ceremonies and also got to design our own medals. Roll on Paris 2024!
First Holy Communion
Congratulations to all who received their First Holy Communion at St. Lachteen's Church. Thank you to all who helped prepare our pupils for this very special occasion.
Butterflies
Our caterpillars have grown to butterflies and we have set them free. We really enjoyed watching and learning the life cycle.
Airport Fun ✈
Junior Infants have been learning all about the airport this month in preparation for our summer holidays. Today we learned how to make paper airplanes and of course we had to have some test flights on the runway to see how far they could fly!
Senior Infants Clay Pots
Senior Infants really enjoyed making clay pots. We made the most of the sunny day by painting the clay pots on our picnic benches outside.
Letter from JK Rowling
There was great excitement today as James in 4th Class received some post to the school. When he opened his letter he found a reply from his favourite author JK Rowling! As part of our class activities for World Book Day 2024 we all wrote letters to our favourite authors and some students posted them off. We were thrilled to get this reply from the creator of the Harry Potter series!
Cork Primary Games
The very best of luck to Conor who will wear the Cork jersey and represent our school and parish at half time of the Cork V Limerick match in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. We are immensely proud!
Fifth and Sixth Class Upcycling Projects
Fifth and sixth class put incredible effort into their recent upcyling projects. Pupils had to retrieve old unused objects and upcycle them to create something new. Pupils worked both individually and in groups. We hope you enjoy a snapshot of their creativity.
Wellness Day
Wellness is a very important part of school life. Today we had a wellness day as part of our work towards our Amber Flag with Pieta. The whole school walked a mile with a smile to show that we are all part of a big team just like lots of people in the community will walk together as part of Darkness into Light on the 11th May. We all practiced affirmations to remind us to be kind to ourselves and also had a dance party on the yard to get energised for the weekend. Throughout the year we have practiced lots of wellness activities including breathing, attitude of gratitude, random acts of kindness and wellbeing homework. We also raised €510 for Pieta through non uniform days. Thank you to everyone who contributed.
Second Class
Second Class are busy preparing for their First Holy Communion on the 18th May. We were learning about procedural writing in English so we put it into practice and made rocky road cakes we were also learning about capacity in maths!
April Assembly
We had wonderful performances from classes at our April Assembly. Junior infants entertained us all with a song, and first class gave a very lively performance of "Wake me Up" as gaeilge. We all joined in with second class as they sang Molly Malone and they also recited a poem as gaeilge. Thank you also to Áine who did an excellent performance to River Dance. Well done to all our Kind Kid Raffle winners for the month of April.
Neurodiversity Celebration Week
This week in St. Lachteen's National School is Neurodiversity Celebration Week. Classes have been learning about and discussing Neurodiversity. We really enjoyed a "minds of all kinds" activity. On Friday we will have a non uniform day and wear colourful clothes to celebrate Neurodiversity.
Talent Show
Well Done to all the pupils who participated in our internal Talent Show. There was a fantastic showcase of a variety of talents and we were proud of every pupil who performed in front of their peers. The very best of luck to our two Sarah's who will represent our school in Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál on Thursday 25th April.
Outdoor Classroom
Junior Infants have been loving the recent sunshine and bringing our learning outside as much as possible. We had a great time doing water relay races, nature hunts and even some orienteering during PE.
Caterpillars to Butterflies
We've had some new classmates join junior infants this month .... We welcomed five caterpillars into our room and have been busy watching them grow and grow. We can't wait to watch them turn into butterflies any day now!

First Class Narrative Writing
First class put exceptional effort into their narrative writing. They worked in teams to brainstorm and plan a story. They then wrote the story and published it with excellent illustrations and covers. A panel of pupils from fifth and sixth class gave them lots of positive feedback.

Making Cupcakes
Senior Infants made delicious cupcakes and decorated them with green icing in preparation for our Lá Glas and Lá Fhéile Pádraig celbrations.
Muifín Fraochán Gorm
Rinne páistí i rang a haon muifín fraochán gorma le cabhair ó páistí i rang a ceathair, cúig agus a sé. With the help of pupils from fourth to sixth class first class pupils made delicious blueberry muffins. Lean na páistí na treoracha as gaeilge. The pupils followed the instructions in irish as part of their mí na gaeilge activities. Bhain na paístí go léir sult as agus bhí siad an-bhlásta. The pupils really enjoyed baking the muffins and they were really tasty.

World Book Day
We enjoyed World Book Day Celebrations on the 7th March. We hope you enjoy a snapshot of the pupils costumes.
Visit from Garda Orla
Fifth and sixth class had a very informative talk from Garda Orla.
World Book Day
Fourth Class pupils dressed up for World Book Day. We also took part in a live, "Footy and Booky Quiz" by Premier League Primary Stars where famous soccer players asked quiz questions and told us about their favourite books. We also designed some of our favourite book covers and wrote letters to our favourite authors.
First Confession
Congratulations to second class pupils who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the week.
3D Shapes
Second Class have been learning about 3D shapes. They used their creativity and learning to create many 3D Shapes.
Planting Sunflowers
Second Class planted Sunflowers on the 1st March. We will be taking care of the plants and watching them grow over the coming months.
Engineers Week March 4th
Mrs McCarthys class made coin batteries. The more coins used they discovered the stronger the battery. We used 2 different types of metal , coins and tinfoil, to create energy and light a tiny light bulb.

Third Class Projects
Third Class pupils are very busy putting the finishing touches on their history projects based on the Ancient Egyptians. The pupils are also rehearsing before they present their projects to their peers. Well Done Everyone, Keep up the Good Work!

February Assembly
We celebrated the end of February with an assembly filled with kindness and entertainment. We heard performances in Gaeilge, poems and songs, and awards were given out for students' kindness throughout the month.
History Projects - Inspirational Women
Students in 4th & 5th Class have been busy preparing and presenting history projects on Inspirational Women. Lots of time and effort was put into researching and designing their projects and we really enjoyed listening to all the facts about these amazing women!
FAI Soccer Blitz
Well done to our girls and boys who took part in the recent FAI soccer blitzes. Our two girls teams had an exciting finish, they played each other in the semi-final which even went to penalties. Well done to all involved.

As part of Valentine's Day celebrations in second class the pupils decorated heart shaped cookies.
Pancake Tuesday
The Glucksman and Cork Public Museum
Fifth and sixth class enjoyed their recent trip to The Glucksman Gallery in UCC and Cork Public Museum in Fitzgerald's Park.
Thank you to Donoughmore Historical Society for their contribution towards our history trip to the Cork Public Museum. The pupils were especially delighted to see Sheila Wallace's intelligence ledger which is part of the exhibition in the Museum. The pupils had studied and learned lots about Nora and Sheila Wallace who were born in Kilcullen South, Donoughmore earlier in the year before a special plaque was unveiled in their memory beside the monument in Stuake.
The current exhibition in The Glucksman Gallery is Radical Archaeologies. The pupils explored the museum and received a very informative talk from Aoife. They then created their own art work inspired by what they had observed using clay. The pupils art work will be on display in the Glucksman in March.
The pupils also saw UCC's collection of Ogham Stones which included an Ogham Stone from Barrachauring, as well as The Boole Library, The Quad and The Honan Chapel.

Year of the Dragon
Junior infants had great fun learning all about the Vietnamese / Chinese new year. This is the year of the Dragon so we made masks and even had some dragon races! We loved watching videos and listening to stories of how other people around the world celebrate the new year. Here’s hoping for some good luck in the new year thanks to our gold coins in special red pouches.
The Big Taste Test in Junior Infants
Junior infants have been learning all about our five senses. Our favourite activity was the big taste test where we had to determine were foods sweet, sour or salty… check out those sour faces!!
Vietnamese New Year - Tet
Students in 4th & 5th Class celebrated Tet this week. We learned all about the traditions and customs of the Vietnamese New Year, such as the red envelopes given to children with coins in them and even had a traditional dragon brought into our class! We had great fun doing art and craft activities based on the Year of the Dragon.

Pupils in 4th & 5th Class did a great job of presenting the weather forecast for our Irish Drámaíocht this week.
St. Brigid's Day
We have been busy in St. Lachteen's N.S. making St. Brigid's crosses. Fifth and sixth class kindly made extra for our local community which were blessed at mass on St. Brigid's day and left in the porch of the church for people to take away.

4th Class loved making St. Brigid’s Crosses this week. We even had a new pupil ‘Johnny Reed’ join us in class for some of the day!
Animal Roadshow
Pupils were very surprised during the week to see a classroom taken over by lots of different animals who visited as part of an Animal Roadshow. Snakes, Barn Owl, Chameleon, Bearded Dragon, Turtle, Tarantula and Rabbits were amongst the animals that visited. All classes got an opportunity to visit the animals and some even held snakes and the bearded dragon! Thank you to Fern and Jasper who visited with the animals and taught us lots of interesting facts. Go raibh míle maith agaibh to the Student Council for organising this educational visit.
January in Second Class
January was a very productive month in second class. We hope you enjoy some snaps of our activities which included science experiments on floating and sinking, making clay hearts and pairing up with sixth class to make St. Brigid's crosses.

The first feel of spring was in the air for our assembly at the end of January. Pupils gathered outside for assembly. Congratulations to all our Kind Kid Winners on the day. Keep up the good work!

Friendly Fortnight
There are lots of activities throughout every class in the school to celebrate our Friendly Fortnight.
Barnardos Online Safety Workshop
Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth classes received talks on online safety from Barnardos. We learned lots of tips to protect us online. Safer Internet Day is on the 6th February this year.
Street Smart - Road Safety Authority Visit
We recently had a three day visit from the Road Safety Authority (RSA). They set up a streetscape mat and props in our school hall to bring road safety to life. Every class in the school took part in a very educational and informative session for this essential life skill.
Catholic Schools Week
Catholic Schools will take place from Sunday 21 to Saturday 27 January 2024 on the theme of Catholic Schools as Communities of Service.
Picker Pals in Mrs McCarthy's Class
Our class signed up and was lucky to receive a unique Picker Pod containing resources for us to use. At the heart of this programme is the Picker Pack which contains all the tools needed for an adult and child to go out litter-picking. The pack will be taken home, at different times, by the children, who with an adult family member will complete a litter pick. The programme is supported by Picker Pals TV ‘shows’ delivered directly to our classroom throughout the year. These shows feature environmental education presented in a fun way with cartoon characters that we love.

Un Montón de cosas para aprender: Lots of New Things to Learn
We are delighted that all pupils in 4th,5th and 6th will be getting weekly Spanish lessons from an outside teacher for the next 10 Fridays.
We were doubly lucky as we received a grant for a tutor and also got an extra €500 grant to buy Spanish Resources and dual language books in Spanish-Irish and Spanish-English for the school!!!!

Christmas Play Dress Rehearsal
Pupils really enjoyed a sneak preview of all the Christmas Plays at today's dress rehearsals. A very enjoyable night is in store for our audience and we can't wait!
Tiana Time
Christmas Flower Arrangements
Fifth and Sixth class made fabulous Christmas floral arrangements. They collected foliage in our locality and at home. Thank you to Mrs. Kennedy for all her help. These will look fantastic in all our homes.
Mindfulness in First Class
First class have been practicing mindfulness through their mindfulness workbooks and mindfulness activities. The pupils have really enjoyed mindful Mondays, mindful colouring, mindful listening, breathing in and out, learning about emotions and mindful bodies. The pupils said it was, "really fun" and it helped them to "focus". They also said it helped, "if you feel mad or sad, take a minute, breathe in and out and feel better".
Grinch Treats
Keeping in the theme of their Christmas Play "The Grinch" the pupils in fourth and fifth class made tasty, delicious and healthy snacks in class today.
Spreading Christmas Cheer
Fourth and Fifth class wrote Christmas Cards and posted them to nursing home residents. We hope it will spread some festive cheer.
Christmas Cake Decorating
Sixth class took part in our annual Christmas Cake Decorating Competition this year. We were wowed and amazed at the pupils artistic and creative designs. Well Done to each and every pupil.

Senior Infants visited the Post Office and Jamesie's shop today and posted lots of Christmas Cards.

Rang a haon 3D Shapes and Christmas Decorations
It has been a very busy few weeks in first class. We have learned lots about 3D shapes and enjoyed making and constructing lots of 3D shapes using a variety of materials. We also had great fun making and baking Christmas Decorations.

The Greatest Showman
Ms. Sexton's class really enjoyed our trip to Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál in Blarney for their performance of The Greatest Showman. It was an incredible show with amazing talent. It gave us lots of inspiration for our upcoming Christmas Concert. We also got a glimpse the beautiful new secondary school and facilities.

Science Experiments in Third Class
There are lots of budding scientists in rang a trí. The pupils presented a range of science experiments to their class during science week. Experiments included edible ice cream, floating paperclips and lots of lava lamps.

Late Late Toy Show Treat Bags

Ms. Sexton's Class Trip to Mallow
Ms. Sexton's class really enjoyed their class trip to Mallow. We set off on the community link bus from Stuake in the morning and returned in the afternoon. Pupils enjoy their trip to the library with a beautiful sensory room, browsing and shopping and a bite to eat before returning to school. We are looking forward to our next day out already!

Pupils in Ms. Sexton's class enjoyed making and eating their pizza's today. They also celebrated a special birthday in the classroom and enjoyed the birthday cake for dessert.
Great Minds Think Alike
The Student Council had planned to buy extra P.E. Equipment and Yard games but so too did the Parents Council. The Parents Council got there first with the funds raised from the Halloween Disco!! The Students Council are very happy with the new equipment and instead will be spending money raised from their Late Late Toy Show Treat Bags on getting a mobile zoo to visit the school!!!

September Assembly
We all really enjoyed our first assembly of the year. There were many performances of songs and poetry including many as gaeilge. Thanks to all the classes for their performances and a special thank you to junior infants for performing in their first ever assembly! Congratulations to the winners of our Kind Kids Raffle. Well done to all the pupils on their fabulous wellbeing art and congratulations to the winners from each class.
Lego Self-Portraits
Ms. Sexton's class created Lego Self-Portraits including their likes and interests in their design.
Mural
Our school mural is proudly on display in our school hall. It was a fantastic project painted by the pupils which incorporated the pupils creative ideas and was brought together by artist Bríd Moynihan. Well done to all involved!
Tug of War
Planting Daffodils
Pupils from senior infants, first, fourth, fifth and sixth class enjoyed planting daffodils in our school grounds. We are looking forward to seeing our daffodils bloom in Spring time.
