Creative Schools Week 2022

St. Lachteen's N.S are participating in the Creative Schools initiative this year. The aim of Creative Schools is to put the arts and creativity at the heart of children’s and young people’s lives. It will support our school to develop and begin to implement our own Creative School Plan as together we understand, develop and celebrate our engagement with the arts.
As a Creative School we have been given the support of a Creative Associate, Brían Crotty, to work with us for 2 years. Central to the Creative Schools initiative is the voice of the young people who are involved. Through this project we hope to deepen the arts and creative opportunities for our students and staff, to develop their creativity and challenge us to think in new and different ways.

Creative Schools Week took place last week, from the 9th – 13th May. We set up a Creative Schools Advisory Group with students from 3rd-5th class who have been doing a great job promoting creativity around the school and coming up with some really fun activities and competitions for Creative Schools Week.

We held a ‘Decorate Your Classroom Door Competition’, with the theme being “Creativity Lives Here”. 6th Class were crowned the winners of the competition, but all classes were presented with a certificate for the fantastic effort they put into decorating their doors, which all turned out so well. Have a look at some of the amazing doors in the photos below and stay tuned for more updates on our Creative Schools Project!

Sciath na Scol 2022

Congradulations to the boys and girls from fourth, fifth and sixth classes who played in the Sciath na Scol. We had a fantastic competition playing Gaelscoil Peig Sayers, Cloughduv, Farran and Dunerrow NS. We had some brilliant matches but, unfortunately the boys were just edged out at the group stage. Our girls however, advanced to the semi-final where we played Ballinspittle NS. They had a fantasic match but unfortunately after a valiant effort by all the girls, we just lost out.
Bualadh bos to all the boys and girsl!!

Senior Infants are really 'eggcited' and have been busy getting ready for Easter with egg hunts, aistear and Easter art work.

St. Lachteen's N.S. Soccer Blitz 2022

Throughout the past few weeks, pupils from 3rd-6th class have been taking part in our school soccer blitz as part of the FAI Primary School 5s Programme. The pupils really enjoyed this tournament and we could see great passion and teamwork by all.
Today we held the finals. The girls' final between Team 1 and Team 3 was a very exciting match which ended 2-1, with Team 3 taking the victory. The boys' final between Team 1 and Team 6 left us all on the edge of our seats as Team 6 took the lead with a last minute goal to finish it as 2-1.
Congratulations to our winning teams and well done to all pupils involved! A special thanks also to our two referees today, Kurtis and Ben.
We look forward to organising some more sports blitzes in the coming months.

Greenfingers!

First class had a bsuy few days planting lots of different fruit, vegetables and flowers. We planted strawberries, potatoes, lettuce and salad leaf mixtures. We also planted some flowers, including Borage and Dahlias flowers.
Our hands may have got a little dirty but, we had a great time!

Creative Schools: 6th Class Rap

As part of our journey this year as a Creative School we had to take the first step of thinking about Creativity and exploring what Creativity is. The pupils from 3rd to 6th Class brainstormed and did surveys on Creativity and 6th Class then did 3 workshops with Sean Murphy(a musician)  creating a rap to express their thoughts on the topic. Below are the amazing lyrics that the class came up with you can even LISTEN to the rap below...
  It's called...   LEAD THE WAY

Imagination, dreams and hope
Never let anybody tell you nope
Even if you’re heading down a very steep slope
Creativity can help you cope
Without it we wouldn’t have evolved
It's a great way to problem solve
World peace, the environment improving
If we believe, this world could be booming
You can get to your wildest dreams
And be anything you want to be
Jump up high, reach for the stars
Make the Olympics or get to Mars
Chorus:
Everybody here’s got something to say
Creativity is something great
You can go solo or collaborate
Just let creativity lead the way

Your imagination is so big
But sometimes you have to dig
You’ve a mind unlike a robot
Use the power that you’ve got
Creation’s are all around
From the sky down to the ground
Creativity is lit
Thats what we have to say about it
Always think outside the box
There’s treasures there to be unlocked
It’s fulfilling and it’s fun
Being creative you’ve already won

On the 9th of March, 2022, the 5th and 6th class students of St. Lachteen's made their Confirmation. The students had spent many months preparing for this special occasion and were fantastic on the day. Although we had rainy and snowy conditions, everyone enjoyed the lovely mass and celebrations afterwards. Thank you to Fr. O Riordan for all his help.
Unfortunately, some students were unable to make their Confirmation on this day, however, Firmount N.S and Aghabullogue N.S very kindly welcomed them in to make their Confirmation with the students in their schools. A huge thank you to the teachers of these Confirmation classes and to Fr. O Riordan and Fr. Peadar Murphy for facilitating this.

St. Brigid's Day

To celebrate St. Brigid's Day, the 6th Class students made St. Brigid's crosses today. We had a really enjoyable morning with all of the students helping each other out, as sometimes these crosses can take more than one pair of hands to get right!
Well done Rang a Sé.

Our School Tour
Shared Recount Writing by 6th Class

On the 22nd of June 2021, we went on our school tour to Ballyhass Lakes in Coachford. 3rd, 4th and 5th Class all went together. Everybody got dropped by their parents, some carpooled and we were very excited. Some were also nervous because they couldn’t swim or they were afraid of the water.

When we arrived, it was a bright, sunny day. The first thing we saw were the high nets, which were at least 10 metres off the ground. We were amazed and even overwhelmed by the height of them. We got split up into groups and each group was assigned an instructor. Our teacher told us to put our bags away so we put them in the axe-throwing shed (unfortunately, you have to be 16 years or over to participate in axe-throwing, so we couldn’t do it).

The first activity we did was the high nets. We walked over to the nets with our instructors and they explained the rules to us: only one person was allowed to go down the slide at a time, no rough playing and no flips were allowed. To get up onto the nets, we had to climb up a slope. In the beginning, it was very scary because it was so high up and it felt like the net could break at any moment. We all rushed onto the high nets, knocking each other down and attacking each other (and the teacher!) with yoga balls. The nets were very bouncy and at first, it was hard to keep your balance. Eventually, it turned into a war of two teams grabbing yoga balls off of each other. The younger classes started robbing the yoga balls from us, so we had to rob them back. It was loads of fun but after a while we started getting tired and took a little rest.

The next activity we did was kayaking. We all went back to the axe-throwing shed to collect our bags with all of our swimming gear and we brought them down to the dressing rooms. We got changed into our swimming gear and got our wetsuits and life-jackets to put on. We were given helmets and paddles. We went over to the lake and the instructor showed us how to paddle the kayak. We divided up into groups of 1, 2 or 3 per kayak. Then, we set off into the water. Although some were trying not to get wet, a lot of people were trying to jump into the water. In the water, we were playing Simon Says, so the instructor challenged us to swap places with somebody else in another kayak, stand up on the kayaks or transfer the paddle from one hand to the other underneath the kayak. We also played a game of catch while in the kayaks. The instructors were really friendly and kept splashing people with the paddles. We came back to shore and lined up on the pontoon ready to go into the Aquapark. We were so excited and some people were scared jump in. Our adrenalin was so high we barely felt the cold.

The Aquapark was a mix between a bouncy castle and a waterpark. There was a swing, a slide and a big tower that you could jump off of. There were also monkey bars, a water trampoline and an inflatable dome. We all rushed up towards the dome but some of us couldn’t get on top of it because we were slipping off. We all teamed up on Mr. O’ Sullivan to push him off the dome into the water. Once we pushed him off we all started cheering! A few of us became more confident in the water and worked up the courage to jump off the highest tower. Then, we all held hands and jumped into the water together. Eventually, the whistle blew and it was time to get out of the water. We were all feeling happy and tired as the end of the day approached.

Finally, it was time to go home. Luckily, we were just hopping into the cars when it started to rain. On the journey home with our parents, we were exhausted but overall, the day was very enjoyable. We would definitely recommend Ballyhass Lakes for a fun day out!

Art and Poetry Competition September 2021

Well Done to everyone who entered the Art and Poetry competition to show off the great things about St Lachteen's N.S.. The judges had a very difficult time picking winners from such a high standard of entries but congratulations to those that won prizes.

Who knew making sandwiches could be so much fun

Some of the children had great fun making their own sandwiches for their school lunch during school. Who know so much learning could be part of this activity. We made shopping lists, went shopping in Jamesies, figured out the steps to make a delicious sandwich ( of course we all had our individual choices for the fillings!), made them and of course ate the lot....yummy!

Best of luck to our Cork Camogie team
